As a nation we have become obsessed with the latest and greatest top ten fad diets. Does this sound familiar? ¨Don’t eat carbs and you will lose weight! Avoid snacks to lose weight! Don’t count calories! Eat six times a day! Eat all the ice cream you want! Eat cabbage soup for two weeks!¨ We have heard all the slogans and a new one comes out every day on the newest and greatest top ten fad diets.
Just recently I saw a report on NBC which gave a pretty good overview of the weight loss process, and it doesn’t have much to do with popular fad diets. The report only corroborated what I have learned personally about weight loss, so let me share these tips with you. Essentially the report talked about fad diets and why are they bad. It explained what the correct way to lose weight and how to do it.
Eat the Right Foods
I know you must have seen those ads where certain popular fad diets say things like, you no longer have to worry about calories. ¨Eat as much as you want¨ that’s their motto! I wish it really worked! You may have to count calories to lose weight, some people may need that structure. Most of us overestimate the amount of exercise we do, and way underestimate our calories. Write down what you eat and what that calorie intake is and then keep track of the exercise you do. It’s important that you do this every day. In fact, this is just healthy eating practices and can be done by anyone including teenagers. After all there have been so many health related issues that stem from fad diets and teenager use.
Just be aware that some foods have more calories than other. For instance, foods that have high fat, have more calories. Fat has twice the calories of carbohydrates or proteins, so you should consume dairy products, or skin on meat , fatty meats in moderation. You don’t want to completely stop eating fat because your body needs a little fat to function correctly. Is this way of eating another one of the top ten fad diets? No, not really this is just teaching you to be aware of what foods are healthy and which foods should be consumed, but in small quantities.
Top Ten Fad Diets and Why are They Bad
Every new method that comes out on ¨how to lose weight¨ touts of the importance of breakfast. And yes, it is the most important meal of the day, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to go have a large breakfast as soon as you wake up, or as in the new popular fad diets, that you have to eat an apple, or cabbage soup every day for breakfast. Popular fad diets cause you to sacrifice foods and this causes bigger cravings when you finally go off the diet.
It just means that you need to eat something in the morning, so you are not that hungry when you do have a meal. You can always have breakfast a couple of hours after waking. Remember it doesn’t matter how many calories you eat at breakfast, what does count is your total daily calories, especially if you are a teenager. Don’t make a healthy diet into a fad diet. Fad diets and teenagers seem to go hand in hand, so its important that you teach your child to eat healthily and in the correct quantities, and help him or her avoid fad diets. Just explain how eating breakfast can help them in their diet endeavors.
The Idea is to Learn How to Lose Weight Safely.
The key in ¨how to lose weight¨ is to learn to eat correctly for your body and your needs and not base yourself on what the ¨ top ten fad diet experts¨ tell you to do. You can eat three times a day or six, it doesn’t matter, so long as you get the right amount of calories and eat the right foods. Although most true nutritionists do tell you that you need to eat at least three times a day. If you do decide to eat six times a day, remember to take your calories into consideration.
As long as you eat wholesome foods, a little of everything, stay away from fatty foods, watch your calorie intake, get the right vitamin intake, and get enough exercise you will learn how to lose weight. There is really no simple, easy, instant method and you cant figure out how to lose weight without exercise. Both go hand in hand, and they both have to be done to be effective. What is true is that unhealthy fad diets are not the answer to your losing that weight.
